  14.     Two industry-sponsored educators will join other
  15. participants at a four-day conference at NASA's Kennedy
  16. Space Center this week marking the launch of the Magellan
  17. planetary spacecraft.
  18.     Some 200 educators from around the country will
  19. participate in the conference, scheduled April 25-28 in
  20. Orlando, Florida. The week concludes with the launch of
  21. Atlantis on space shuttle mission STS-30, carrying the Venus
  22. mapper spacecraft Magellan into space.
  23.     Martin Marietta Astronautics Group of Denver,
  24. Colorado, which built the Magellan spacecraft, will host
  25. Anthony W. Zaragoza, an astronomy and chemistry instructor at
  26. West High School in Denver.
  27.     Diane Island, principal of Canyon Elementary School
  28. in Santa Monica, California, will attend as a guest of Hughes
  29. Aircraft Company of El Segundo, California, which built
  30. Magellan's radar mapping instrument.
  31.     The conference is designed to give teachers and
  32. educators background on current missions exploring the solar
  33. system. In addition to science and math teachers at levels
  34.  
  35. from grade school through university, participants include
  36. planetarium directors, science lecturers and science
  37. education specialists.
  38.     Magellan will be the first NASA spacecraft launched
  39. to explore another planet in more than a decade. It is also
  40. the first of several planetary craft which will be initially
  41. launched by NASA's space shuttle.
  42.     Mission plans call for the 7,604-pound Magellan
  43. craft to be carried into Earth orbit in the cargo bay of the
  44. space shuttle Atlantis, scheduled for launch April 28. The
  45. shuttle's cargo bay will open and Magellan will be released.
  46. A booster rocket attached to Magellan will then fire, sending
  47. the unmanned craft on a 15-month cruise to the planet Venus.
  48.     The Magellan Launch Educators' Conference is
  49. sponsored by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory's Public Education
  50. Office with NASA's Educational Affairs Division and NASA
  51. Kennedy Space Center's Office of Education and Awareness.
  52.     JPL manages the Magellan Project for NASA as part
  53. of the space agency's program of solar system exploration.
  54. Magellan is funded by NASA's Office of Space Science and
  55. Applications.
